The centerpiece of the third book is this image of the stegosaurus, the flesh-and-blood Amaranthine Beast, if flesh and blood it is really made of. The stegosaurus was long since extinct by the beginning of the Cretaceous era, along with almost all of its family. A few survived the end of the Jurassic, but were long gone by the time of our story. The stegosaurus could never have fought the tyrannosaurus, as it did in the original Fantasia. Nevertheless, I wanted this most iconic of dinosaurs in my fantasy novel, so it had to become a fantastical dinosaur, and there are few dinosaurs as fantastical as the stegosaurus.
This image echoes the earlier images The Golden City and The Frozen City, where it is depicted quite accurately as bronze statue. Here, however, it is aflame, with its very skin cracking and fire coming from its mouth and eyes, a genuine terror once seen with our own eyes.
