The final image in the story, a triumphant flight from the ruined island fortress to the city in the sky, featuring a flock of mounted pteranodons and Ilasa in all her feathered complexity, against a rosy, golden sunset. The most challenging aspect of this image, apart from the feathers I’d already recreated for an earlier image that depicted her, was Jaral. His new appearance didn’t include a new model, but new skin, new eyes and a new robe proved more challenging than I expected. I debated even including the image, as it is effectively a spoiler if you’re the type to flip ahead and view all the illustrations (or read the last few pages). But the almost angelic image of Jaral lifting Lara out of danger, even as she clutches Eralo’s remains and the ruined sword, was too much to pass up. But that angelic image in my head turned out to be anything but triumphant when I first rendered the scene. Jaral’s white skin and bare feet made him look sickly, made worse by an awkward angle I’d turned his head. Remodeling his feet and even his head alleviated most of it, but I had to add a billowing cloak in the style of the old pre-Raphaelites to create the impression of flying. Adding Ilasa with her wings spread and even more pteranodons around them added to the angelic appearance, so that, after much work and returns to the drawing board, I am at last happy with the image—except perhaps for a few things I might still change....
