This entire episode is taken from the most fanciful place in all of Arthurian legend, the mysterious lake where the Lady of the Lake dwells. It was beneath this lake that she reared the greatest of knights, Sir Lancelot of the Lake. Few people know much of this side of the story, so I borrowed heavily for my story, if only to introduce people to the wonder of these old fantasy tales.

The lake itself is populated with a variety of fish, the most notable in this image being the coelacanth, which was chosen for a reason. The coelacanth was well attested in the fossil record, being much older than the dinosaurs. But, like the dinosaurs, it was believed by paleontologists to be extinct, until one was discovered, alive and well in the Twentieth Century. The coelacanth is a warning to us all never to forget that our assumptions are not fact, and that, in the end, most of paleontology and science in general is about certain as my fantasy speculations about it.
